So we have time warner cable, and up until about a month ago, our internet was fairly reliable, we would have the occasional 5 minute thing where the internet wouldn't work, but no big deal overall, but in the past month our internet has been freakin unreliable, and I doubt it is time Warner's fault, yes you get overcharged, and there customer service is fairly lousy, but their internet is decent. it's obnoxiously slow, but it was reliable. I have a feeling that our modem is on its last legs, it has been so unreliable that I have had to use my mobile hotspot so I could have decent internet, but I've used it enough that we have burned through over 90% of our data for the month but the data count doesn't reset until the 20th of this month. I keep trying to tell my mom it's the modem, (btw, the modem is a motorola surfboard sb4100, which I couldn't find an exact date for manufacturing or when it was new, but in the manual, it mentions windows me, 95 and windows 98, which makes sense because the house that we live in now was built on 1999 mad my mom is the orginal owner, and as far as I know, she has only ever had 1 modem). But I keep trying to explain that data overages for Verizon are going to be probably more expensive than just buying a new modem, and the solution of that is far worse, because the internet on her Mac has been super unreliable lately as well, but she doesn't get the fact that something for internet that is 15 years old, almost as old as me, is like an ancient dinosaur.
The router has also been unreliable, and for some reason, she never let me change the SSID, so after having wifi for 5 years, our SSID is still the same as what it was when we got the wireless router.
TL:DR, our cable modem is 15 years old, hardly works, and my mom doesn't feel the need to buy a new one event the the internet has been super unreliable lately

Oh my god... The level of stupidity and stubbornness your mom is exhibiting is excruciating. Sorry for the insults, but this line of thinking makes me mad. My mom is very stubborn as well. Im just glad she understands her limits and can admit when she doesnt know what shes talking about

just go by one for her birthday or something!
even a really cheap and low end one will fix the existing problems and you might get some extra bonuses as well (like WiFi with WPS)

yeah, it's obnoxious, I could understand her not wanting to get a new router about 2 months ago when we just had an old reliable modem, but the internet has sucked so bad I can't stand it, especially because I do online high school (not my choice) so I kind of need a reliable internet connection.

Oh man, the high school thing makes it worse. You'd think shed be sympathetic and humour you even if she doesnt believe the modem is the problem. It doesnt seem like she cares about your education. From my perspective at least

maybe she could get me one for me as an early birthday present because my birthday is like a month from now, I can't stand it one for one month, but in 6 months from now (her birthday is in early April). I would be ready to kill someone.

ironically, she is a music teacher, and a very good one at that, I have a reliable internet connection, (Verizon Mifi) but I don't like to use it if at all possible because only 8 gb a month for 4 devices.

Show her prices on modems and compute the costs of overages from verizon over the course of a year with her. Even someone who doesnt understand electronics understands savings

haha, I usually just say that's it's either last year's birthday present or next year's birthday present since I'm notorious for not being able to give people birthday presents on time!

that's what I was thinking of doing, I have a feeling you could get a decent modem off of amazon for like 40-50 bucks, and that would be only 3 gb of data overages, and once you have the modem, you own it.

Haha, for her last birthday,I bought my moms birthday present online on her birthday, and then the guy didn't end up sending it until about a week after I ordered it, and then by the time I got it, it was like 2 weeks late, although it was a hell of a lot better present than others (who gives someone a used printer for Christmas? Me that's who, granted it was like only a year old and still worked well.)

Do that. If she still disagrees, then buy it yourself. You'll prove her wrong and she'll never doubt you again.

Also have TWC, also hate it. We have the highest package available, yet I struggle to pull down 10 mbps with my brand new laptop. We have a time warner supplied system (which is absolute ass) and every time I complain about it my dad insists it's fine because he doesn't want to have to deal with it. I resorted to using my mom's mobile hot spot through Verizon, and I can't use my phone because I have sprint and get no coverage.

if it is that important to you, you should go buy one. If you are broke, check craigslist.

Just buy one yourself instead of bitching about the person who's paying the bill..

Do something about it.
You could have put together a really nice pitch with examples and prices in the time you took to write this rant.

Buy a new modem then. Help her out. She pays the bills, right?

we only get 1 Mbps down and up (yes that is megabit, not megabyte) and I know you can get much faster service because I have used it at my moms work, and got 30 Mbps down and 5 up, and I had the wifi password to our neighbors wifi and I could get 15 down and 1 up.

If you have a Time Warner store front, you should be able to walk in there and swap the modem out for free. They will give you one that is newer than the 4100 (it may not be DOCSIS 3.0), but it will work much better than what you have. You will still have to pay the rental fee, but if you are not going to buy a modem, I would swap this one out, for one that works.
